Exxentric kBox Pro Review – The Ultimate Flywheel Trainer?

Writer: eodstadseodstads

Flywheel training remains a niche training modality, often misunderstood by the general fitness community. However, for those who grasp its benefits, it provides a unique and highly effective method for strength, hypertrophy, and power development. My introduction to flywheel training came years ago when a physical therapist used it as part of my injury rehabilitation. Since then, I have integrated flywheels into my training, particularly as a strongman competitor, and have tested multiple brands. Today, I’m diving deep into the **Exxentric kBox Pro Gen 5**, one of the most well-known and respected flywheel training devices on the market.

First Impressions & Unboxing

Upon receiving the kBox Pro, I immediately noticed the high-quality packaging, ensuring all components arrived in pristine condition. The flywheels were individually wrapped, and the platform itself showed no scratches or damage—a testament to Exxentric’s attention to detail. As a self-proclaimed equipment nerd, I get excited about any new gear, but flywheels hold a special place in my training arsenal, making this unboxing even more thrilling.

What is Flywheel Training?

Flywheel training differs from traditional weight training in that it relies on rotational inertia rather than gravity to create resistance. Here’s how it works:

1. You attach a flywheel disc to the kBox’s drive shaft.

2. You generate force by pulling on a strap attached to the drive shaft.

3. The flywheel stores kinetic energy and then pulls you back down in the eccentric phase, requiring you to resist the motion.

4. The harder you pull, the more resistance you generate, leading to a unique method of progressive overload.

This method is particularly effective for eccentric overload, which research suggests is crucial for muscle growth and strength development.

Build Quality & Design

Exxentric is known for producing professional-grade flywheel systems, and the kBox Pro is no exception.

  • Dimensions: The largest of the kBox lineup, measuring 35” x 22” with a floor footprint of 39” x 25”.

  • Weight: 35 lbs of solid steel construction.

  • Surface Material: A high-grip but non-abrasive material that provides traction without excessive wear on shoes or discomfort for barefoot lifters.

  • Welds & Construction: The platform includes cross braces for added rigidity, laser-cut branding, and finely machined components, all with smooth edges and no manufacturing defects.

  • Built-in kMeter: This feature allows for real-time performance tracking via Bluetooth, connecting to the Exxentric app for instant feedback on force output, velocity, and power.

Performance & Training Benefits

Where the kBox Pro shines is in its ability to safely overload the eccentric portion of the lift, making it a powerful tool for both rehabilitation and performance enhancement. Traditional strength training often underutilizes eccentric loading, but the kBox naturally integrates it into every movement.

  • Versatility: Ideal for squats, deadlifts, rows, and more, though it is limited to vertical pulling motions.

  • Progressive Overload: By increasing the speed of the concentric phase or adding larger flywheels, users can progressively increase resistance.

  • Smooth Motion: The drive shaft provides a seamless transition between concentric and eccentric phases, with well-calibrated tolerances ensuring controlled movement.

Accessories & Compatibility

Exxentric sent me a selection of accessories, including:

  • kBar: A padded deadlift-style handle, capable of handling heavy loads.

  • kGrips: Comfortable, foam-padded handles that remain durable despite heavy use.

  • Belt: A low-profile hip belt with a rear handle for coaching assistance.

  • Angle Adjuster: Allows for different pulling angles, improving upper-body exercise options.

  • Decline Board: Possibly the best slant board I’ve tested, offering incredible stability and adjustability.

One minor issue is that Exxentric’s new shackle system doesn’t directly accommodate some existing gym attachments, such as MAG grips, without an additional carabiner.

The Exxentric App & kMeter

The kMeter is a game-changer for tracking performance, and the Exxentric app provides detailed metrics, including:

  • Score System: A proprietary algorithm measuring force output and velocity.

  • Peak & Average Power: Additional data points for tracking training intensity.

  • Exercise Library & Customization: Includes preloaded exercises, with an option to add custom movements.

  • Auto-Start & Fatigue Tracking: Allows for intelligent set termination based on performance.

  • Subscription Model: While the free version includes basic tracking, the **Pro version ($19/month)** unlocks guided workouts. However, the lack of frequent new workout additions makes this subscription less appealing for most users.

Pros & Cons

Pros:

✅ Professional-grade build quality with solid steel construction.

✅ Exceptional eccentric overload capabilities.

✅ Built-in kMeter for real-time performance tracking.

✅ Smooth, consistent resistance and minimal mechanical lag.

✅ High-quality accessories, including the best slant board I’ve used.

✅ Compact and relatively easy to store.

Cons:

❌ Expensive, with a base price of **$2,990** plus additional costs for accessories.

❌ Limited to vertical plane movements (horizontal pulling requires a separate kPulley system).

❌ The new shackle system is less compatible with third-party attachments without an adapter.

❌ Pro subscription for the Exxentric app is pricey given the limited workout library.

Who is This For?

The kBox Pro is best suited for:

  • Athletes & Strength Enthusiasts: Looking to optimize eccentric loading for strength, hypertrophy, and power.

  • Coaches & Therapists: Providing a versatile tool for performance training and rehab.

  • Home Gym Owners: Who want a space-efficient, high-tech training system.

  • Lifters with an Experimental Mindset: Those willing to learn a new modality and integrate it effectively into their training.

Final Thoughts – Is It Worth It?

The Exxentric kBox Pro is, without a doubt, one of the best flywheel training devices available. It offers a premium build, industry-leading performance tracking, and an incredibly effective training stimulus. However, its high price and niche application make it best suited for serious athletes, coaches, and strength training enthusiasts who will maximize its potential. If you are willing to invest in cutting-edge training technology and want to harness the power of eccentric overload, the kBox Pro is a worthwhile addition to your gym.

Would I recommend it? Absolutely – but with the caveat that it’s not for everyone. If you’re considering a flywheel trainer, this is one of the best you can get.
